EVALUATION
Starting at the beginning of my journey, the first week was very nerve racking, meeting new people and most of all i had not been on a hair or make up course previously. During my first lessons i was lacking confidence in my own work, but look back on previous work to work i am producing now makes me extremely happy with how confident i have became.
Research and practical lesson within make up i both really enjoyed an never really got distracted which meant they helped me a lot throughout my thought process for my final design. Sue and Kat have been very helpful throughout the 10 weeks of teaching and gave very clear instructions on how to do certain techniques.
Building up to the assessment day i was very nervous i had only practiced my partners design on myself and not on her skin type. After the assessment i examined my partners face and i thought i did really well with making the make up look like her skin instead of it sitting on top on the face. When taking the pictures Sue did mention a few faults but they were expected with it being my first assessment but i know these mistakes will help me in future assessments.
Assessment day for Laura was fab but i know she need a lot help with it, she had practiced once during one of the lessons, but when it came to the assessment day i found that she wasn't feel confident. I did put clear instructions up but i think applying the make up stage was the hard part for her. Unfortunately i did not have pleasant( dry and spotty) skin during her assessment which meant it was harder for her to cover. But all together i thought she done had done a perfect job and it was similar to the look i wanted to portray.
Overall, i am pleased with what i have achieved throughout my journey on the BA(hons) Make up and Hair course.

PEER ASSESSMENT - LAURA KENTS DESIGN
Assessment Day - Laura Kent :Designer , Me :Artist
Assessment day was today, it was the most nerve racking day i've had in a while.
The reason why i was so nervous during the morning of my assessment is i had not practiced Laura's design.
Unfortunately we had both been off during the weeks for practice which meant neither of us were fully comfortable with the design.
Laura set out step by step, steps for me to create her design, they were clear instructions and understood them well. Once i step foot in the studio i got right on with it and felt comfortable doing her design.
Below are the end results for Laura's design.
PEER ASSESSMENT - MY DESIGN

I will speak about how i felt Laura got on in my evaluation.
CONTEMPORARY MAKE-UP INFLUENCES.
Influences.
The above images have inspired me with my final design.
Each one has inspired with different paths to go down, they are all each to their own, instead of copying directly i want to go around it a different way, i want my look to be different compared to anyones design.
Looking at these photos, you can the artist have put there everything into the make up and to the design.
Contemporary, these images are very contemporary and thats what i am lacking in my design at the moment, my design is still very elizabethan, i think you will get some styles which are going to be basic and i would say safe design but i like being risky and love to think out of the box.
After researching these images, i am excited to see my final outcome and i hope you are too.

FACECHART PRACTICE.
The above images are facecharts of idea's for my final design.
I personally think they are all really similar, as i have one idea spinning around my head but i always changed something on my next go, my final design will be the one i like the most and the one i feel my partner can proceed through with, without any help.
I enjoy playing around with different kind of make up and experiment so you can understand how much i enjoy doing my facecharts.
In the following posts you will eventually see my final design.
CONTEMPORARY PRACTICE
The below images show practice images of my contemporary elizabethan look, as i was not in
for the contemporary look i did not produce images of work which was expected, but i did
manage to practice my look for my partners assessment.
These images will be adjusted in my assessment and things will have changed, as i was not satisfied with the results.
These images will be adjusted in my assessment and things will have changed, as i was not satisfied with the results.
Before took these images, i messed about with egg whites, i seen that they make the skin
more tighter and stiff but did not now how to apply to the skin meaning do i put on before or
after my end result?
I learnt that if you put it on before your skin base it starts to flake so i restarted and put on after
but i did not wait for it to dry properly but i knew that was the right way of doing it but you
have to make sure you don't smudge/ruin your end result while applying.
In the first image you can see my face has a gloss, this is not i wanted as elizabethans have a powdery look but looking at it in the assignment way that could be added for the contemporary twist.

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
![]() |
When watching The Taming of the shrew in lesson with Sharon, i thought the film would be rather boring and not relevant. Having said that, i more than take that straight back, the film portrayed several references throughout the film of Queen Elizabeth I.
Starting with Shirley Hendersons attitude throughout the film is a great examples for one of the several references, Queen Elizabeth was extremely powerful and you see this in the film with the main actress Katherine Minola (Shirley Henderson). Both Katherine and Queen Elizabeth, were asked to marry to improve her public apperance and to be seen as a powerful politican as for Elizabeth the as a Queen. Katherine's Sister 'Bianca is the exact opposite, she is a gorgeous female who loved to be pictured. During the film you see Bianca's apartment, where she hung portraits of herself on walls and cabinet tops. This evoked me of Elizabeth and how she loved to be in control of how she looked/portrayed in her images to the public.
During The taming of the shrew, you see Katherine wears a lot of black, this enforces she is wealthy, Katherine's family wore black, white, beiges and fur pieces of clothing. Eventually you are introduced to Bianca's Agent, in the begining of the film he is seen to be wearing bright and colourful garments this in seen as someone with little money, as in the Elizabethan age people with colour worked on the land and was exposed to sun. During the end of the film when he is ready to marry Bianca's mum he is seen in fur. Katherine's mum is seen to be wearing jewels, colourful jewels infact, this refreshes images of Queen Elizabeth wearing jewels and pearls which we're a symbol of her position if the Queen.
Overall the film inspired me to think more into what actually was Elizabethan reference and how to come about them, It taught me to research more into the Elizabethan era and not to pick the first thing you see, as i would of never picked up on the taming of the shrew without watching in it in Sharon's lesson. I really enjoyed the film and would recommend into anyway studying the Elizabethan era.

CARINA BUCKLEY ANALYTICAL REVIEW - THE DANGER DRESS
Downtown bulverde Texas, Saturday 5th Decemeber 14:00pm we set of for the surfing cowboy shoot. We had our camera crew set and our model ready, but there was just something missing when capturing the right image, the pictures were looking stunning but not stunning enough to win the front cover page of where are the surfing cowboy magazine.
Suddenly one of the crew members noticed a young women wearing all white leaning on the blue wall near by, the sun was reflecting on her nicely, she was wearing a gorgeous outfit that look fresh clean of the tennis court, she was fabulous. I kindly approached her to ask if i could take a few pictures, she didn't reply, i asked again but same there was no reply. She looked straight past me as if she was day dreaming, I knew then it was clear to take the images.
As i started to take the pictures the sun started to set, each image got better than the first, until i took that perfect one!
The perfect image is the one showing above, it needs no caption or explaining the picture does the talking.
In that split second of looking at the perfect image and smiling to myself i look up and the young women has vanished, it felt like i had dreamt her but the images were real and legit.
Leading from this day, we did win the front cover page of where are the surfing cowboy magazine but i just wish i new the young women, maybe one day i will.

SELF PORTRAIT
The above photo shows my self portrait, the photo as you can see contains my dog, my suitcase and a chair in my home. The reasons why i chose these things are because my dog is my everything, ever since i was a toddle i used to beg my mum every christmas and birthday for a puppy eventually when i was 15 i got Mr noodle, unfortunately he wasn't a puppy as i wanted but he was 2, an still actually acted like a puppy, but didn't come with the disadvantages of chewing, p*ssing and sh*tting around the house which was an absolute bonus!!
Secondly, my suitcase is originally meant to be in my self portrait but my mother isn't very good at taking photos and zoomed in but i tell you why it is meant to be in it. While growing up i have been many places around the world for short break holidays, these holidays wasn't the average holiday. Personally i wouldn't say i really boost about my holidays either considering my mum brought 3 children up single handed, she has done a pretty good job, managing to take me to places such as, Texas,Kenya,Miami. I've had the opportunity to go on Gullet Cruise and Caribbean Cruise. Growing up with experiences like this has just made me more determined to travel the world more. Eventually after my degree i will have a year out and travel properly.
Thirdly, the chair, the reason why i am on this chair in my house is mainly because no-one is actually allowed to sit on it! my mum bought it 2 years ago for show, which is actually pretty funny because it happens to be cream. Ive delayed taking this photo personally because i wanted to have a chance to have a photo with this chair, also this chair is weirdly similar to a chair someone who is royalty would sit on, which links in with the elizabethan theme which i thought was great! Another reason is when looking at this photo i feel happiness, with everything i love and being in my family home it makes the photo have security within it too!

SEVEN PHOTOGRAPHS THAT CHANGED FASHION.
The seven photographs that changed fashion.
While watching this short film i was astonished by the outcome of Ranking interpretations of the Seven Famous photographs.
While watching the film i understood each photographer worked in a different way from cameras to the development side.
The photo which originally caught my eye throughout the video which intrigued me the most was Erwin Blumenfeld Vogue french cover 1950
The left Photograph is the original captured by Erwin Blumenfeld, and the right is the interpretation by Rankin Captured 2008.(MODEL JEAN PLANCHETT)
The photo was originally captured in black and white, but Blumenfeld took focus on certain parts of of the image, eyes and lip and made them the main part of the image. In the short film it was mentioned the image looked almost like pop art. Certain areas of the image such as the shadow below the lips and the colour on the eyes were painted on afterwards as Erwin Blumenfeld like to play around with the colour and shadow. Blumenfelds original idea was to bleach out the image and manipulate the image later.
The image is thought not to actually work but it strangely does, it doesn't have cheekbones showing nor does it have a nose visible you would naturally think that wouldn't look right but Blumenfeld liked to work outside the box and that truly inspires me.
While researching into Blumenfelds work i have became more inspired than i did before, He truly loves his work and you can see throughout the image he portrays. One day i aim to be as daring as he was in his photography.
The image above shows Rankin's interpretation during his actual photoshoot.
Rankin decided to use Heidi Klum as the model for his version of the French Vogue Cover 1950. Rankin final image turned out to be astonishing to what i thought was an amazing photo. Ranking decided to give the model a personality during the the modern twist photoshoot which made the image more inspiring.
Rankin Edited the photo in same way as Blumenfeld but also used modern technology also.
Even though i have chosen this particular image i would say each seven photographs inspired me, an gave me ideas to think outside the box, be yourself not someone else.

COMTEMPORARY PORTRAIT.
PORTRAIT
My contemporary portrait is of the beautiful Marilyn Monroe, this photo was taken at Amagansett Beach in the Hamptons, 1958 by Sam Shaw.
This photo was one out of many the many beach photo shoot, shot by Sam Shaw. The first thing i notice in this photo is Marilyn's legs, they aren't thin, with a thigh gap, in fact they are stuck together, if you ask me this a picture of a perfect women.
When i look at this photo of Marilyn i see power, confidence, beauty and CURVES. In today society you see a lot of edit photo's were girls have been "skinny app'ed" but in this photo you can see she is proud of her curves and everything else with it, and i would say that is god damn powerful!
I connect to this photo myself as I'm not typically skinny an i don't really agree with the fashion statement of being stick thin.
Another thing what caught my eye is that she looks elegant, most beach photoshoots are with girl wearing barely anything BUT not this one, she is wearing a full swim suit! I think that is a statement.
The colour of her bathing suit also stands out, the fact its white is rather amusing, White symbolises goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. Which we all knew she would but It is also considered as the colour of perfection.
By looking at this photography i have realised that today's society has gone more judgemental on body sizes and looks.
THE WESTMORES.
The westmores
The legendary Westmores are famous for their legacy in the hair and wig industry. George Westmore started to give his cilents make-up advice in exchange for hair styling services, so in 1917 George westmore opened the first and tiny Make-up department, at Selig studio.
George, has six sons; Perc,Ern,Monte,Wally Bud and Frank. Four out of six, Monte,Perc,Ern and Bud had comprehended the industry to become chief make up artists at four major studios. All brothers continued to break ground in the horror and new beauty illusions until their careered ended.
Ernest son of George won the first award given to a make-up artist by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, for his work on the film Cimarron in (1929-31). The next make-up award was not given until 1982.
why?
Researching the Westmores was relevant to my brief as Perc Westmore, worked with Bette Davies during the film "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex" in 1939. Bette Davies was the first hollywood actor to appear bald on screen, even though it was 3inch shaved of he headline.
She later did the same again in future years. References.

APPEARANCE.
Portraits of Queen Elizabethan aren't significantly realistic on how she actually looked like, well they give us some idea of her physical appearance, but from them alone it is not easy to visualise what she actually looked like.
“...her face oblong, fair, but wrinkled, her eyes small, yet black and pleasant; her nose a little hooked, her lips narrow and her teeth black; her hair was of an auburn colour, but false; upon her head she had a small crown. Her bosom was uncovered, as all the English ladies have it till they marry. Her hands were slender, her fingers rather long, and her stature neither tall nor low; her air was stately, and her manner of speaking mild and obliging.”
Paul Hentzner, German visitor to Greenwich Palace, 1598.
The above passage gives us more of a visual image to what she possible looked like. Queen Elizabeth did enjoy having her self painted and she was often painted looking a lot more younger than she actually she was.
From my previous lesson with Sharon discussing what Queen Elizabeth looked like, We discussed that Queen Elizabeth started losing her hair and originally had black teeth due to the lead used in her make -up. Queen Elizabeth also had scaring on her face from smallpox.

In her book “Elizabeth the Queen”, Alison Weir describes the 25 year old Elizabeth as:
“tall and slender, with a tiny waist, small bosom and beautiful, long-fingered hands, which it pleased her vanity to display to advantage in a variety of affected poses. She had a swarthy complexion like that of her mother, although she made a habit of whitening it with a lotion made up of egg-whites, powdered egg shell, poppy seeds, borax and alum, which made her face appear white and luminous. She had inherited also Anne Boleyn’s long, thin face, high cheekbones and pointed chin. From her father she had her red naturally curly hair and high, hooked nose.”

TUDOR COSMETICS.
Tudor cosmetics
The use of make-up during the Elizabethan era was a fashion which the Queen herself set. Queen Elizabeth was naturally a red head with a pale complexion, but as she grew older she wore more detailed make -up which was useful for hiding her scarring on her face from small pox. The mixture was also useful for hiding wrinkles and other signs of ageing this helped her maintain her illusion of beauty and image of the Virgin Queen.
During the Elizabethan Era only people who wore wealth were capable of achieving the pale look, this indicates that the poor women would be working outside so their complexion would appear a lot darker to the wealthier.
The mixtures the elizabethan worn was Ceruse this was vinegar and lead, this mixture was extremely poisonous but the Queen still chose to use it, but in later years faced the consequences.
Cohineal was also used to stain their lips and cheeks, this is also used in food colouring in today's era but originally made from crushed beetles. Madder and vermilion was also used to redden the effect. Kohl was used to darker their eyelashes also.
The image above gives us a perfect illusion of how Queen Elizabeth looked during her time as the Virgin Queen.

VIRGIN QUEEN.
Queen Elizabeth 1st
It was expected that Queen Elizabeth would marry and continue the Tudor line with children. Despite numerous courtships,Queen Elizabeth never produced an heir nor did she marry. As Elizabeth grew older, she became famous for her virginity. A Grew of people which known by "A cult" grew up around her which was celebrated in the portraits, pageants and literature of the day. The cult was in full swing in 1550-1580's.

Theory's of why the virgin Queen never married;
- One theory is that she never married because the way that her father had treated his wives had put her off marriage,
- Second theory is that she was elegy abused by Thomas Seymour while under the care of Katherine Parr,
- An last but not least the third theory suggests that she was so in love with Robert Dudley that she could not bring herself to marry another man.
UNDERSTANDING QUEEN ELIZABETH.
Brief
Looking at the brief for the Elizabethans Project, i was told to look into painting portraits, books, film etc base on the Elizabethan era. We was told not to just look at Queen Elizabeth, but as she was one of the biggest influence not just in her own era but today too, i feel it is important to start with her.
Facts I know about the Elizabethan era are that Queen Elizabeth 1st was a rainbow of characteristics, she was cunning, vain, kind, smart and was very manipulative. Elizabeth was a natural red head with a natural pale complexion, later on in years she does enforce more colour to her hair and face.Elizabeth Loved beautiful clothing and jewellery. Leaders of the sate were to travel around the world to show their leadership but Elizabeth had a lot of catholic enemies so she had her self painted in fabulous outfits to symbolise her leadership of the state.
The cosmetics worn by women during the time of Queen Elizabeth differed radically from those we wear today. Not only were the materials used--kohl, ceruse, vermilion, etc--far different, but the look that women tried to achieve was different as well. Standards of beauty change over the centuries. To understand the cosmetics worn by Elizabethan women, it's important to understand the effect they were trying to achieve--that "ideal" of beauty that they wanted to imitate.
The following video gives a brief speech about Queen Elizabeth's 1 life.
I have also written parts if the video underneath for future references. When Henry the V11,Father of Elizabeth and his son died Mary, Elizabeth's half sister was made queen and due to religious differences she locked Elizabeth in the tower. Mary Died in 1558 making Elizabeth queen at 25 years of age.
Because Elizabeth was a female monarch she new she could use her appearance in court to create a loyalty and affection to her from the courters.
Fears
My fear of doing this brief is that we have to list out our imagination of how we would like our look and leave it in the hands of our partner. I myself is little more nervous to be given someone else's picture and do it totally different on how they expected. Considering it will be my first time exploring make up and i will try my best and hopefully they will like the final piece.

I am really looking forward to hearing more about the specific way they made their makeup and the tricks that they did to show how they thought beauty was.
Another fear is combining a modern look with an historical look to come up with a final idea, but researching into it more will give me more depth about the elizabethan era.
One of my favourite sonnets from shakespeare is below.
- "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun
Coral is far more fair then her lips fair
If snow be white, why then, her breast is dun,
If hair be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks..."
Why?
why is this information relevant you may ask?
This information will be useful me in future reference throughout my first semester. It will give me, the reader/ designer a visual image of how i would like my interruption of Queen Elizabeth to look like.

THE 'IDEAL' ELIZABETHAN WOMEN
Whilst researching the Elizabethan era, i came across a post about the "ideal" Elizabethan women.
The Elizabethan view of pure beauty was a woman with light hair and a snow white complexion complimented with red cheeks and red lips. A pale complexion could only be achieved by a woman of the upper class. Lower class women were expected to work outside and therefore acquired a suntan! The pale complexion was therefore a sign of wealth and nobility - an immediate identification for a person from the upper classes! This alabaster complexion was therefore also required by Elizabethan men! Queen Elizabeth not only achieved this picture of ideal beauty by using white make-up but was also a natural red head.
The photos of Elizabethan are interrupt photos of Queen Elizabeth as she was extremely vain!
The Rainbow Portrait, c. 1600–02, attrib. Isaac Oliver
The photo above is a perfect match to the description of the ideal women.
Although the fashion for women changed to more seductive look it was important for Queen Elizabeth to maintain her image and the beauty of the virgin Queen.
UNDERSTANDING THE ELIZABETHAN ERA.
Elizabethan Era.
The Elizabethan era was highly famous for theatre as, William shakespeare and many others composed plays that broke free of England's past style of theatre.
While researching the Elizabethan era i noticed seeing that England was a well-off compared to other nations around Europe. I came across a passenger saying the historian John guy (1988) argues that England was economically healthier, more expansive and more optimistic under the Tudors than at any time in a thousand years.
Other historians often portray the Elizabethan era as the Golden age in english history.
The Elizabethan era is observed so highly largely phases before and after. I was a brief phase of largely internal peace between the English Reformation and the battle between Protestants and Catholics and the battles between parliament and the monarchy that submerged the seventeenth century. For a time the Protestant/Catholic divide was settled by the Elizabethan Religious Settlement, and parliament was not yet strong enough to challenge royal Absolutism.

Tuesday
Tuesday morning we were up at the main building for 9:00am for Sharon to take us across into town where the Solent IT/ Library is. This was to give a short presentation for us to know where the IT/library was for future references.
We then had a two hour gap where people could either go into town and finish their research task as well as the chance to sign up for the GP.
Once we came back we was seta short exercise and make masks, which turned out to be big brown paper bags we had to design whatever we liked or what we wanted to be in 5 years time.
As you can see below I made mine into a person who looks different, this not just in bad way, but i wanted to explain my personality to always be yourself and not copy other.
We then had to pose for a selfie somewhere as Sharon our course leader loves a good old self!
Wednesday
Wednesday morning we was given our sally's salon head kit, this gave us the chance to have a look and organise our bags for future lessons. Later on we had 3 representatives from Illamasqua who gave us a detailed description of their company and products.During this process one of the representatives chose a model (Beth) to show us techniques to use the brushes, we got to understand why they always keep their brush moving and how quick they move it, the end result was amazing as you can see underneath.
THURSDAY
Thursday morning we had a sales pitch from Charles Fox about all the Krylon Products and their companies history which was very interesting. Gemma, the sales rep went through all the products including her favourites, best sellers and the ones we have in our own kit.
After this we had the freshers fair were you could join up to different Society's as well as lots of discounts leaflets, you also had the opportunity to get free Dominos Pizza!
FRIDAY
Friday was the day we were meant to go on a little road trip but instead they decided to prospone the trip for another two weeks and organise a trip to London for the 10.10.14. This is an opportunity for us students to go look around the portrait gallery as well as buy discounted products from MAC Illamasqua and Charles Fox.
